Lately, I have been feeling a bit listless. I am tired, can't be bothered exercising, having difficulty getting motivated at work and around the house. I ask myself "What's wrong? Do I need a new challenge? Maybe I should be looking to change my outlook or philosophy on life; get religion or something; a change of career?" Then I realise; none of these things will do the trick. What I need is my football team to start bloody winning.

Edinburgh Festival Fringe

Penny and I went through to Edinburgh yesterday and took in some shows at the Fringe. This is a rather weird collection of shows stretching from the genius to the just strange and you never really know what it is until you've seen it (and sometimes not even then).

Gavin and Gavin in Our Funny Bones was the first of the shows that we saw. Gavin & Gavin turned out to be not a firm of solicitors but instead two insane (but talented) sisters performing a comedy double act. Penny wasn't entirely convinced by them, giving most emphasis to the insane part of the description, but I thought that they were funny. Some good ideas that were energetically and accurately performed.

Lylice on the other hand, didn't really convince either of us. Part of the problem was that it had been described in the listings as a comedy and, although there were one or two amusing moments, it wasn't really comedy. It was the, well observed but a little chaotic, story of a precocious but socially challenged eleven year old through a year of school. Like it's solo performer, Jen Nails, the show is very American and some of the references were lost on the audience. Jen, though, is very talented and the show was cleverly put together. The songs especially hit the right note for a talented eleven year old with attitude and the characters were well performed. There seemed to be something missing, though. Perhaps it was just the missing laughs.

Dean Friedman - Squirrels in the Attic was the highlight of the day. Dean Friedman was well known in our younger days for tracks such as Arial, Lydia and Lucky Stars. This show did not include any of those; it was a different kind of show. This being the fringe, Dean brought along his collection of funny songs. They were very funny indeed. Another aspect of it being the fringe, there was a tight schedule and an hour just didn't seem like enough. We had seen Dean before in his normal show and a couple of these tracks had been included there but the majority were brand new and absolutely hilarious.

Jazz @ Henry's: John Rae New Jazz was the final stop on our day. This was just a little bit too "new" for us. Some good solos and excellent technique from the players didn't make up for the inaccessibility of much of this music. We left half way through this to catch a train but, with headaches on the way, may well have left even without a train to catch.

All in all, it was a day that we thoroughly enjoyed. Edinburgh at festival time is a weird but strangely atmospheric place. We went through for the first time last year and will probably go back for a day next year. I probably wouldn't want to spend more than a day there but it gives us experiences that we don't get in our normal lives. That's a good thing.
